Potty Training Using Food Coloring

Updated on August 10, 2011

For the following information, only you the parent can determine when it is the best time to start training for the potty. . I can't give you that information. There are questions you need to ask yourself. Training for your child going to the bathroom at night by his or herself is one of the main issues that only you can determine as well as do you think your child is ready. Another question especially when training for getting up at night 1.Is the bathroom on another floor or close to his or her bedroom. 2. Do you feel comfortable enough for your child to get out of bed to go to the bathroom while you're asleep. These are just two basic questions. I don't know how your house is set up, but I'm quite sure you understand what I'm saying and you will figure it out..

I don't know what age you would want to start potty training. Some children start as early as 1 1/2 to 2 years old, some start later. Depends on the child. When they're pretty much walking on their own, not bumping into things or falling. When they have a steady hand at walking and they want to go everywhere you don't want to go. Basically their game of follow the leader, and they're the leader. Leading you every which way , but the right way. I've found that most children that start to pull off their diapers or pampers when they are wet are ready to start potty training.

Another thing, parents have a tendency to sit their children in front of the television when they sit them on the potty. You can do it, I'm not telling you what to do. But I would advise you not to. This is why, when you sit your child in front of the television, they tend to get so involved in what's on the television they lose tract of why they're on the potty, and they will sit there forever. If you keep the potty in the bathroom, there's nothing for them to do but go potty. They also begin to realize that they can't play or watch T.V. until they potty, so they tend to go to the bathroom just so they can get back to playing with their toys or watch T.V. This stage of your child growing up takes patience from you as a parent. When you feel yourself getting frustrated, just stop, take a deep breath and say " Lord, please help me make it through this, I need all the help I can get."

Food coloring the first step: Get some food coloring. Any color will due, but you want the water to change color, any color but yellow. Blue food coloring I find best, because when they urinate it turns green. Get a nose dropper. Don't put too much coloring in the toilet water, maybe two or three drops. You don't want the liquid to over power the effects you're looking for.

Before you or your spouse go to urinate, put two or three drops of liquid into the toilet. When you do this the water should turn green. When you do this a couple of times, your child will be fascinated and want to do it to. They'll be very curious as to how the water changed. After you give him something to drink , try to determine how long it is before his diaper or pampers are wet. Is it 1 or 2 hours. Maybe after an hour you could just sit them on the potty. Sometimes if you run the water, not heavy but a light stream they tend to urinate. I don't know what it is about hearing the water running, but it's worked for my children.

When they are trained well enough and are going to the bathroom on their own, you can stop putting the coloring in the water. They are going to ask you how come the water doesn't turn colors any more. That's when you let them know that they are a big girl or boy and they don't need it anymore. When they have achieved this give them something special like a toy they wanted or take them to out to eat, make it like a celebration for them. Maybe make them a cake. Praise them and let them know how proud you are of them. Actually you can make it a celebration for the both of you. Go out and buy them their first set of underwear, with their favorite cartoon characters or better yet let them choose what they want to wear. I'm quite sure it will make you as a mother feel even better. People will look at you and see a smile on your face, they'll think you've won a million dollars. I hope this helps. Let me know.
